We Are Human Because We Learn From Our Mistakes
Today, my son fell out of his high chair — because I didn’t thoroughly check to make sure he was secure. I was doing several things at once and forgot to focus on the one that mattered most: his safety. I failed him.
Yes, “I’m human, and humans make mistakes.” But I also have to acknowledge that this mistake could have cost him his life, or changed it dramatically. So I didn’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I ran to him, wrapped my arms around his screaming body, and soothed him — kisses, tight hugs, ice on the lump rising from the left side of his head.
He cried for ten minutes. Then he gave me a smile that told me he was okay. This ten-month-old boy found time in his own pain to soothe me. I kept examining him, trying to erase my guilt — and he started to laugh.
In that moment, I understood the strength of our spiritual bond. He knew that I knew: we’re in this life together.
A lesson was granted to me that day. His safety comes first, and better habits have to follow. I placed him back in his high chair, made sure he was strapped in and secure, and we dined as a family.
My lesson in AccountableLove today: mistakes have to be corrected, and there’s no time to feel sorry for yourself when you’ve failed someone you love. Love means changing a bad habit to strengthen the whole relationship.
